“The brain is not a Christian. The brain is not a Muslim. The brain is the brain.”
That was what I heard as I sat in class today during a training on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I sat at the feet of one of Nigeria’s finest, Samuel Babatunde Obafemi.
Someone may ask what a writer like me has to do with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
In life, we all face events. These events are triggers that send information to the brain. These triggers cause a flurry of thoughts that evince some emotions that lead to corresponding actions.
The bridge between the triggering events and the thoughts is where the domain of our beliefs resides. Either we have unhealthy beliefs or we have healthy beliefs. These beliefs are the causes of empowering or disempowering states.
While I wouldn’t go into pretty details, I’ll explain how this affects you as a writer.
Have you ever felt awful that you put up a nice post and someone comes on your timeline and delivers a shattering assessment?
If you let yourself go into an unresourceful state ( for example, depression), it’s because you’ve let that person’s interpretation based on his or her memory bank to affect you.
. The memory is a store of learned experiences. The memory can either bring you down or raise you up.
Here’s why you take certain actions when certain triggering events occur.
Let’s take an instance where your brother was murdered in cold blood during a riot by a certain Galadima who is a Muslim in the North. The name sticks to your memory. It remains indelible. Your memory stores that for as long as you live. The feelings you had, seeing your brother being murdered, are not wholesome at all.
Now, imagine that a certain Galadima approaches your sister to marry her. Your memory trumps up the experiences from the past and elicits the same feelings in you that you felt during the time of your brother’s death. The Galadima asking for your sister’s hand in marriage may be innocent, but the emotions you felt may truncate the process. You may end up looking for so many reasons to scuttle the plans of marital conjugation.
People who place comments on our written pieces are merely reacting based on what their memories throw up which lead to the actions that they take – either place a great comment or deliver a knife to your heart.
What do you do?
You’re at peace when you know you don’t have power over interpretation when you write. You will never have that power.
Someone will ask why people just place very disheartening comments. Answer : The earth is in a degenerative state.
That’s why the earth is populated by negative folks. Being in a positive state is a result of deliberateness. That’s what the Bible means by “….but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” It’s a call to responsibility and action.
My goal as a coach, consultant and speaker is to leave a pleasurable feeling in the souls of my listeners such that when they hear my name, it elicits a smile that opens them up to a favourable reception. This is practiced so that I gain mastery.
Understanding the psychology of humans is a game-changer for your business as a writer. Your goal is to write with your legitimate intention and a focus on the objective – sharing your work.
[shareable]I say again : Write everyday! That’s the best habit you can have as a writer. [/shareable]
